Gunters Landing (DIXIE PGA)

14 June 2016

I just finished my first tournament of the summer.  Had a great time with my mom, dad and Coach Jaclyn.  Met some really nice people at Gunter's Landing Golf Club.  Beautiful course but very difficult. For you golfers, I would encourage you to play this course.  Huge elevation and well maintained.  Greens are true but very fast.  Have fun and good luck!  CLICK HERE for Tournament Details

On Sunday, the day before the tournament, me and Coach Jaclyn played a practice round to gather notes about the course.  This was one of the most intimidating courses I have ever played.  I knew this was going to be a tough course to manage.  A lot of hazards and plenty of water.  I gathered as much information as possible to help prepare me for the tournament.  I shot a 41 on the front nine hitting the fairway 8 out of 9 times.  I missed the fairway on the very first drive but was able to scramble for a par.  I hit 6 out of 9 greens in regulation with 19 putts.  On the back nine, I also shot a 41 with a 6' birdie putt on 18 that would have put me at a 79.  This was a tough down hill and right breaking putt.  Geez!  I 3 putted.  On the back nine, I hit 8 out of 9 fairways with 18 putts.  I hit all 4 par 3s close with an almost hole in one on #5.

After reviewing my data, I was really surprised to learn what cost me the most.   I was 5 over on the 4 par 5's.  I like to be aggressive on par 5's but I learned had I just laid up to my best club, I would have easily shot a 76 or 77.  I was thinking that my putting really got me but it was course management.  Well, live, play and learn.  All in all this was pretty good for my first tournament of the summer.  I will be playing about 5 more throughout the summer including the 54 hole AGA Girls Junior Golf Championship in Bessemer, AL.
